Taken from Eelstheband.com (no way to permalink to their news entries - text reformatted by me for readability’s sake)Eels had planned to advertise their new CD & DVD “Useless Trinkets” rarities collection during the Super Bowl XLII television broadcast with the world’s shortest commercial.
As NME reported, Super Bowl advertising time costs approximately $100,000 per second, so the Eels opted to make a 1 second commercial. Unfortunately, as Eels leader E reports, “In the end we were told that the NFL would have to find 29 other advertisers to buy 1 second spots to fill a standard 30 second advertising slot and that they do not sell advertising time by the second.
“They also noted that a rapid fire 30 second segment of thirty 1 second commercials could cause people with certain medical conditions to have seizures and that it was against network regulations.”
